The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science invites applications for a


University Professorship in Pattern Recognition and Probabilistic Graphical Models (Salary Scale W1)


starting on October 1st, 2021. The appointment will be for 5 years.


The professorship should cover machine learning in research and teaching. The future professor must have an excellent scientific background in machine learning and several of the following application areas:


  • Foundations of Machine Learning
  • Probabilistic graphical models
  • Neural networks, Deep Learning
  • (Conditional/Markov) Random Fields
  • Pattern recognition in graphs
  • Bayesian Networks.


The appointed person should foster collaborative research with other research groups at the university. A close cooperation with the application areas of machine learning at the Faculty of computer science and electrical engineering is very much desired. The professorship is involved in the bachelor and master programs in computer science. Lectures in computer science e.g. with a topic on “probabilistic graphical models” is mandatory. Prerequisites for the employment of Professors are a university degree, an outstanding dissertation and an excellent publication record. Substantial achievements and experience in academic research and teaching, at the level of a Habilitation according to the German academic system, are expected.


Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Higher Education Act of Lower Saxony (Niedersächsisches Hochschulgesetz - NHG). Details will be explained on request.


Part time employment can be arranged on request.
